Petty cash basics
Petty cash log
A petty cash log is the running record of every dollar that goes in and out of the cash tin. If the log is right, the tin balances.
What to record for every entry
| Field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Date | Matches the receipt and the month it belongs to |
| What it was for | Lets you spot spending that shouldn't come from petty cash |
| Amount out or in | Drives the running balance |
| Running balance | Tells you what should be in the tin right now |
| Who took it | Someone to ask when the count is short |
| Receipt or voucher number | Proof of the expense for your books |

Balancing the log
Cash in the tin plus the receipts taken since the last top-up should equal the float. If it doesn't, check for missing receipts and unlogged top-ups before writing off the difference.
Rather do this on your phone?
PettyCashing puts a QR code on your cash tin. Staff scan it, log what they took and snap the receipt. You see the balance that should be in the tin, every receipt, and who took what. Free while we launch.
